Greater Peace Community Development Corporation (GPCDC) has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Alabama State Department of Education to enhance its Summer Educational Enrichment Program, known as Camp SEEP. The funding will expand scholarship opportunities, increase pay for certified teachers, and provide students with enriching field trip experiences and updated classroom technology.

Expanding Access and Rewarding Educators

A portion of the grant will go toward additional scholarships, ensuring more students have the opportunity to attend Camp SEEP regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. The funding will also allow GPCDC to offer higher pay for the certified teachers who lead the program, helping the organization attract and retain experienced educators dedicated to student growth throughout the six-week camp.

Field Trips That Bring Learning to Life

With grant support, Camp SEEP students will travel to three of Alabama’s premier educational destinations:

  • The Legacy Museum in Montgomery explores the history of racial injustice in America, tracing the story from slavery through mass incarceration. The museum offers students a powerful, immersive look at history that connects directly to lessons on civics, social studies, and American history.
  • Majestic Caverns in Childersburg, formerly known as DeSoto Caverns, is a historic show cave featuring guided tours through massive limestone chambers, striking onyx formations, and an underground waterfall. Recognized as one of the first documented caves in the United States, the site gives students a hands-on introduction to geology, earth science, and Alabama history.
  • The McWane Science Center in Birmingham is a hands-on science museum featuring interactive exhibits, an IMAX dome theater, and an aquarium. The center gives students the chance to engage directly with STEM concepts through experiments and exhibits designed to make science come alive.

These excursions extend learning beyond the classroom, allowing students to experience firsthand what they study in their lessons.

New Tools for Interactive Learning

Thanks to the grant, Camp SEEP teachers have also been able to purchase supplies and materials to create more interactive and engaging projects and lessons for students. Among the new resources is a 65-inch smartboard, which allows educators to incorporate multimedia content, interactive lessons, and collaborative activities into their teaching. Smartboards give teachers the ability to blend visual, auditory, and hands-on learning styles in a single lesson, helping to keep students engaged while making complex concepts easier to understand and retain.

Why Camp SEEP Matters

For six weeks each summer, Camp SEEP brings certified teachers together with students to

prevent learning loss and build on academic skills gained during the school year. This kind of structured, teacher-led enrichment is especially critical for students in underprivileged areas, who often face the greatest risk of summer learning loss due to limited access to educational resources, enrichment activities, and academic support outside of the traditional school year.

By pairing certified educators with meaningful field trips, updated technology, and engaging, hands-on lessons, Camp SEEP helps close opportunity gaps and gives students the tools, exposure, and confidence they need to thrive when they return to the classroom in the fall.

Greater Peace Community Development Corporation extends its gratitude to the Alabama State Department of Education for this generous investment in the future of local students.
