From Camp Counselor to Future IT Leader
For Kylin Perry, the journey toward leadership, service, and success began with a single step into the doors of Greater Peace Child Development Center at the age of two. From early childhood, his education evolved into a life-shaping experience that continues to influence his academic, professional, and personal journey.
As a young student, Kylin took full advantage of the opportunities GPCDC provided. He actively participated in the STEM After-school program and the Summer Educational Enrichment Program, designed to spark curiosity, build academic strength, and encourage leadership. These programs introduced him to new ideas and gave him the tools to believe in himself and his future.
One of Kylin’s most memorable experiences came through GPCDC’s College HBCU Tour, where he and 21 other students from Lee and Russell counties visited campuses across Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. For Kylin, seeing colleges firsthand, especially Historically Black Colleges and Universities, gave him a sense of pride and helped him visualize himself in those spaces and motivated him to pursue higher education with clarity and confidence.
During high school, Kylin’s relationship with Greater Peace deepened as he took on the role of camp counselor. In that role, he mentored younger students and developed key skills in leadership, communication, and responsibility. His hard work and dedication were recognized in 2021 when he was awarded the prestigious Clifford E. Jones Scholarship is an honor given to students demonstrating outstanding potential and commitment to their community.
Now a senior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Kylin is majoring in Information Technology Systems and already making his mark. He currently works in UAB’s IT department, gaining hands-on experience that is helping shape a promising career. On top of his academic and professional responsibilities, Kylin proudly serves as a sergeant in the Alabama National Guard. This leadership position draws heavily on the foundation built during his time at GPCDC.
“Greater Peace CDC helped me gain confidence in myself and my abilities,” Kylin says. “And for that, I will always be grateful.”
Today, Kylin is a shining example of what happens when potential is met with opportunity, guidance, and community. The lessons he learned at Greater Peace, from teamwork and discipline to compassion and determination, continue to serve him as he forges ahead on a path filled with purpose and promise.
